The Pitamaha Bhishma was born under the Avittam nakshatra. His birth is a fascinating story. His father King Shantanu wed the river Ganga in her mortal form on the condition that he never question her actions. On the birth of their child, she threw the baby into the waters of the river, and repeated the same for the next 6 children. On the birth of their eighth child, Shantanu could no longer control his anger and asked her why she killed their children, she says she can no longer live with him, and would bring the baby back to him in due course and disappears. She named the baby boy Devavrata, and he trained for a period of 150 years with Brihaspati and Parashurama, before returning to his royal family. By his circumstances he vowed to take Bhishma Pratigya and was henceforth addressed as Pitamaha Bhishma.
