Uttara Bhadrapada / Uthrattathi

Lakshmi, the Goddess of all material wealth was born under the Uthratathi Nakshatra. Legend has it that the Devas and the Asuras wanted to get the Amrit from the Paarkadal (The milky ocean). They sought the help of the Trimurthys. Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and balanced Mount Meru on his back in the ocean. Vasuki the divine serpent wrapped himself around the mountain. The Deas and Asuras held the ends of Vasuki and churned the Milky ocean.

The ocean yielded many treasures and Lakshmi is send to have ascended from its depths, holding the Amrit in a pot in her hand. As Vishnu saves the Amrit from the Asuras, she takes him as her consort, and reigns over all material wealth on earth.
